The Danish writer/director Anders Thomas Jensen may not be a household name in Hollywood, but he’s an extremely respected and critically acclaimed filmmaker throughout the world. Jensen’s resume includes an Oscar (winning in 1999 for Best Live Action Short Film with “Valgaften,” aka “Election Night”) as well as two previous Academy Award nominations–in 1997 for “Ernst & lyset” and 1998 for “Wolfgang.”
Since breaking onto the scene in the early 1990s (gaining his first professional credit while still in high school), Jensen has been extremely prolific; he is probably best known in mainstream circles for writing “Brødre,” which was nominated for several film festival awards and was turned into the American film “Brothers,” starring Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Natalie Portman. The film is a stark take on how the lives of two brothers are forever changed when one goes to war in Afghanistan and the other takes his brother’s place within his family.
His latest project, a screenplay for a big screen treatment of Stephen King’s “Dark Tower,” is currently filming. While Jensen is most known as a screenwriter, he has also directed quite a few films. He took 10 years off between helming projects, but he was back behind the camera (as well as writing the screenplay, of course) for last year’s “Men & Chicken.”
The film tells the story of two outcast brothers trying to reconnect with their family’s roots, and discovering some unsettling truths along the way. Jensen is equally adept with comedy, drama, and suspense. Over the past 25 years, he has honed his craft, and can almost take credit for creating a whole new genre with Danish action comedies. Jensen is a unique talent with some interesting insights into almost every aspect of filmmaking.
