While there seemed to be no movie which dominated this year’s Golden Globes, two of the biggest prizes went to Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants.” The film won Best Picture in the Drama category and Best Actor for George Clooney.

Other winners in major categories included Meryl Streep for Best Actress in the Drama category for her performance in “The Iron Lady”; with her larger than life portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, it was almost a lock that she would win.

Martin Scorsese won Best Director for “Hugo,” Woody Allen won Best Screenplay for “Midnight in Paris,”and Morgan Freeman was presented with the Cecil B. Demille Award for Lifetime Achievement. Freeman also recently won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute (AFI).

“If you do what you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life,” Freeman said after accepting the award.

This year’s Golden Globes, the 69th annual edition, were hosted by Ricky Gervais, whose cutting wit was on display, much as it was last year. And speaking of last year’s audience, at one point Gervais said, “You're so much better than last year's audience. They had a right stick up their ass." He also had something to say about Colin Firth’s unflappable nice guy image: “I’ve seen him punch a blind kitten.”
