The nominations are out for the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards, and Michel Hazanavicius’ “The Artist” leads the way with six nods. “The Artist” is the astonishingly rendered homage to the silent film era starring Jean Dujardin. Hazanavicius was able to transport audiences back almost 90 years with his innovative filmmaking techniques, while creating a compelling story that spoke to 21st century audiences.

The film was nominated for Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical); Hazanavicius was nominated for Best Director and for Best Screenplay; Dujardin for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical; Bernice Bejo for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture; and Ludovic Bource was nominated for Best Original Score.

Other films with strong showings include “The Ides of March,” “The Help,” Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris,” and Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants.”

Both Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet are up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) for their roles in “Carnage.” The Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role category also features two actresses from the same movie—Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer from “The Help.”

Ryan Gosling has two Best Actor nominations, in both the Drama and Comedy/Musical categories, for his turns in “The Ides of March” and “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” respectively. George Clooney was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama) for his role in “The Descendants” and also as Best Director and for Best Screenplay (along with Grant Heslov and Beau Willimon) for “The Ides of March.”

A film surprisingly left off the list for Best Motion Picture (Drama) was “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” directed by David Fincher and starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig. Mara did receive a Best Actress (Drama) nomination, and the film itself was nominated in the Best Original Score category for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

The 69th annual Golden Globes, presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, will be given out Sunday, January 15.
