The nominations for the 84th annual Academy Awards have been announced, with “Hugo,” directed by Martin Scorsese, grabbing 11 nods and the silent film “The Artist” garnering 10 to lead the way.

They are joined by seven other contenders for Best Picture, including Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse,” Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris,” “Moneyball,” "The Descendants,” which is looking to capitalize on some of its Golden Globes momentum, “The Tree of Life,” “The Help,” and “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.”

In the Best Actor category, George Clooney, with his performance in “The Descendants,” leads the pack, alongside the somewhat surprising nomination of Demian Bichir from “A Better Life” and the expected nomination for Jean Dujardin from “The Artist.” In the Best Actress category, it is Meryl Streep, fresh from her Golden Globe win for “The Iron Lady,” who looms the largest. Streep has been nominated 17 times, winning twice in her career. Michelle Williams, who has been amassing an impressive body of work as of late, was nominated for “My Week with Marilyn.”

Of her nomination, Williams said, “I am so grateful to be acknowledged by the Academy for my work, which was made possible by the support of our director Simon Curtis and the camaraderie of a terrific ensemble of actors – a special congratulations to Kenneth Branagh (who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor-ed.) – and the fearless Harvey Weinstein. This role has been the challenge and privilege of a lifetime. I would like to think that the recognition our film as received by the Academy is a testament to Marilyn’s legacy.”

While traditional Hollywood fare seemed to lose its footing somewhat this past year, it was “The Artist,” the beautifully rendered homage to a past era which rose to the top of everybody’s Oscar list. Among its 10 nominations, Michel Hazanavicius received three—for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Film Editing (nominated with Anne-Sophie Bion).

“I am so honored for this nomination,” Hazanavicius said. “Filming ‘The Artist’ in Los Angeles was a dream come true, and to receive this recognition today is far beyond what I ever imagined. I couldn¹t have done this film without the incredible cast of actors and outstanding crew whose heart and souls were poured into this project.”

The Academy Awards will take place Sunday, February 26 and will be broadcast on ABC.
