Tribeca Films has announced it has obtained the North American rights for the independent film “Death of A Super Hero.” Tribeca's Nick Savva and Bavaria Film International's Steffie Zietler worked the deal on behalf of filmmaker Ian Fitzgibbon.
While today's indie filmmakers have a variety of options it is the coveted distribution deal that can send a film into the path of a larger viewing audience. Professional distribution offers exposure for independent films by bringing movies to the attention of viewers who would otherwise not hear about smaller or non-traditional film work. Tribeca will bring out the film to Video on Demand (VOD) which utilizes a cable TV option as well as the more traditional theatrical release.
Fitzgibbon, an actor in his own right known for his appearances in the Irish soap opera “Balleykissangel,” expressed his appreciation of the opportunity in Tribeca's news release, stating, “I'm absolutely thrilled....Tribeca has an unprecedented reputation and an impressive library of daring films...”
The film stars Andy Serkis ("Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "Burke & Hare"), no stranger to quirky film-making, as an unorthodox psychologist and Thomas Brodie-Sangster ("Love Actually," "Nanny McPhee") as the teenager who creates a dark world to offset the ineffectual reality of his day-to-day life. Described as a “blisteringly modern love story,” the film had its world premier at the 36th Annual Toronto International Film Festival.
Critical acclaim on the festival circuit brought much attention to the film and its use of live action and animation. An original story by Anthony McCarten, who also wrote the screenplay, its complex human elements are not lost to the film's noteworthy Irish coast and Dublin locations.
