There is more than one path to take to become a successful filmmaker. Just ask Christian Sesma, who was originally a restaurateur from Palm Springs, California. Sesma had a passion for film, and decided to make some micro-budget short films which eventually garnered some attention. This led to his first feature, “6:30,” which was made on budget of about $15,000.
The film ended up with a distribution deal, and that led to Sesma’s next project, “Shoot the Hero!” The movie starred Jason Mewes (possibly forever known as Jay from “Clerks”) and Danny Trejo, and was a well-received comedy/action vehicle for the two. “Shoot the Hero!” was released on multiple platforms by Warner Bros. in 2010. That year proved to be busy for Sesma, as he also wrote and directed “I’m Not Like That No More,” which starred Felipe Esparza and Paul Rodriguez. “I’m Not Like That No More” received distribution as well, with limited release in 25 cities as well as being available on iTunes and Amazon.
Fast forward a half dozen years or so, and Sesma has turned his passion into a pretty successful second career. He is now turning his web series, “Vigilante Diaries,” into a movie. “Vigilante Diaries” turns the super-hero genre on its head; it dispenses with the usual good-hearted duo with questionable pasts fighting evil for all the right reasons. Instead, the series, which stars Paul Sloan as The Vigilante and Kevin L. walker as his sidekick, The Kid, just goes straight for the gut, with amoral good guys and even more amoral bad guys doing battle amidst a battle ground of profanity and viscera. Sesma has already made a TV movie out of “Vigilante Diaries,” and expect more of the same gleefully demented fun from the feature.
Frequent collaborator Mewes also stars in the feature, along with Sloan, Walker, Michael Madsen, and Michael Jai White.
In this week’s episode of the podcast Sesma breaks down his journey taking “Vigilante Diaries” from web series to feature film.
