Horror has been very good to filmmaker Darren Lynn Bousman. As the only director in that genre to have his first three movies open at number one in the box office (“Saw II,” “Saw III,” and “Saw IV”), Bousman hit the ground running after graduating the film program from Full Sail.
In 2005, the year that “Saw II” hit theaters, Bousman was signed to a two picture deal with Dimension Films (an imprint of the Weinstein Company). And since then, he hasn’t taken his foot off the throttle. In addition to helming much of the “Saw” franchise, he has directed other horror thrillers such as “Mother’s Day” and “The Devil’s Carnvial.”
Bousman’s latest, “Abattoir,” should continue to deliver what his fans have come to expect. Starring the up and coming Jessica Lowndes (“90210,” “Hawaii Five-0”), Joe Anderson (“Hannibal”, “Outsiders”), and the always solid Dayton Callie, (“Deadwood,” “Sons of Anarchy”), “Abattoir” tells the story of the intrigue, mystery, and gory details of a family’s murder at the hands of their own relative.
Lowndes plays a reporter trying to untangle the reason why houses where tragedies have occurred keep being bought up by the same person. When her sister’s family is murdered, the mystery deepens; she turns to a former lover for help, and what they discover becomes a hellish landscape in a town where it always feels like night. In this town, the rooms where the people are murdered hold much more than just memories, and those rooms are joined together in the Abattoir, a house of unending terror which could hold the souls of the poor people who have been killed.
As someone who has helped define the horror genre for the past decade, Bousman’s story—both on set and off—is a great inspiration for aspiring filmmakers. In this edition of the podcast, Bousman talks about his latest film, “Abattoir,” and how he broke in with his spec script which became “Saw II.”
