If you’re looking to break into the screenwriting business, then taking a class or a workshop taught by Corey Mandell may just be the thing. Mandell is a playwright and noted screenwriter who has penned projects for quite a few heavy hitters in Hollywood—including Ridley Scott, Wolfgang Petersen, and Harrison Ford, among others.
But more importantly for Mandell and his reputation, his students have gone on to have options bought or scripts sold to almost every major film and TV studio out there: Warner Brothers, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Disney, Fox, MGM…and the list goes on.
Mandell is a distinguished instructor at UCLA, the same place where he earned his MFA. He also teaches screenwriting and television writing at Film Independent, Harvardwood, as well as heading up workshops around Los Angeles. Mandell maintains a very strong online presence, recognizing that where there is content, there is a way. As the film industry continues to evolve, it’s no longer just strictly about writing in the same way we’re used to or even selling your script to a film or TV studio in the same
Mandell preaches that it’s not just about the talent; and with more avenues open than ever before (and also more competition than ever before as well), you have to identify several important factors if you want to be a successful writer. A few of the things he talks about are creative integration, compelling cinematic conflict, organic story design, and the writing process itself.
Being a writer is more than just coming up with one great concept and then trying to pad it out. Your script better be solid from first act to third; it also needs to be strong in the pitch meeting. Mandell could just be the guy to teach you all about it.
